20 Years of Interim

Jim Dorsett wrote the "In The Interim" column, which he described as cross between a journal entry, a snapshot, and a letter to friends," in every issue of The Scale Cabinetmaker. It provided him with a place to discuss the goings-on with Dorsett Publicatitons, and later with the restoration of the Christiansburg Station. As Dorsett Publications begins yet another phase, we will be adding new interim columns, but for now the original "In the Interim" columns are reprinted below.

After Helen (Fall 1990-August 1996)

In August, 1990, Helen Dorsett died of cancer. For the six years following her death, Jim continued publishing The Scale Cabinetmaker. but much of his joy in the publication died with her. The color and the roomboxes disappeared from the front cover and were never brought back. The articles reflected his areas of expertise and became far more technical in nature. There was far less historically accurate whimsey from the workshops at Dorsett Publications and more from outside writers.

After a four year hiatus from the publishing industry, Meghan Dorsett returned to do the technical layout for TSC while Jim focused more of his energy on developing content. Helen had been prolific in the studio, and her loss meant that more of the pages were filled with articles from contributors. After he retired, Jim admitted that he could never quite fill the void in the final years of TSC, although he tried.

In 1991, Jim hired Mary Marye White as his office manager. In 1993, they married. Jim continued publishing TSC until 1996 when he finally decided to throw in the towel and retire after twenty years of 14 hour days.
